Newsletter: 148 for December 2008

Dave P. was up for a party tonight and was delighted to welcome so many guests and friends along. He was also really pleased on behalf of the members to see Zac, Caroline and Andrew who had come along tonight after a long absence. We’d missed you.

Dave had some announcements to make and wished Nicky a happy 40th birthday, Mike Elvin a happy – we don’t know how many – birthday and a congratulations to Martin and Nicky on their surprise (especially for Nicky) engagement. Members had signed a beautiful card to say well done! Martin explained to everyone how this had come about during Nicky’s recent birthday party. Nicky said thank you to everyone who had come along for this get-together and a thanks too to David “Great Spaghetti” Croucher for his cabaret and Dave P. for his balloons.

It was agreed that the monthly Challenge Competition would be held over until January so it would be “fruit” in the new year then.

So on with the party and Mike and Brenda, in matching hats, took to the floor to get everybody in the mood for a good time. First up was their now infamous musical chairs and the grudge match between Paula and Nicky. Paula unfortunately didn’t take part this year so Nicky was up for a win but with some many guests and some youngsters, she really didn’t stand a chance and it was great that Sophie, one of Nicky’s friends, took the crown. Top prizes for winners this year.

Mike had prepared a pictogram competition of famous magicians just for fun which everyone was invited to take part in.

Next up was Mike’s pass the envelope game which it didn’t take long for newcomers to establish was very scary. There were loads of winners and Paula’s whistling rendition of the National Anthem was excellent – although one feels Reg could have done better!

Patrick and Lynn learnt to spin plates with Patrick actually being rather good at this. Lynn needs a bit more practice!

It was then onto the guess the sweets game and this proves quite difficult. Teams were asked to discover which sweet from a cryptic clue – excellent mind exercise, enjoyed that one.

After the quiz it was time for supper and a huge thanks to all for bringing food with them. There was quiche, cheese, biscuits, cake, mince pies, Indian bits, etc. etc. Absolutely loads of stuff with very little left at the end of the evening. The wine had been kept from our birthday party so that was a bonus too.

Some members performed after nibbles and these included (if you’re missed off the list, I apologise)

Dave Croucher appeared a billiard ball and a disappeared £1 coin into a nest of boxes

Patrick with his mental sketch pad with artist Hazel

John (not Pierre this time) and his appearing silks in so many different ways

Nicky with her lucky Christmas bags with Lynn randomly picked to participate

Brenda with appearing Christmas decorations all over the place

and finally Martin with guest Penny and his magical washing machine!

So ended a very happy evening full of friends, laughter and magic. Huge thanks must go to Mike and Brenda for this evening especially as he told the audience that he had performed for the 32nd year running at nursery school earlier in the day! Thanks also to those who helped clear up at the end of the evening stacking chairs, washing up, putting chairs away, etc. It really is appreciated by the Committee.

Only remains to wish members and their family and friends, a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy 2009.

Meeting finished at 10.20pm
