Newsletter: 145 for September 2008 Dave welcomed everyone along this evening to Wayne’s lecture and also introduced Wayne’s wife Marianne and Louie, their beautiful and very cheeky Yorkie who had also joined us this evening. Colin was welcomed back after a brief spell in Spain. He would be auditioning to join ACES in October. As agreed last month, it had been agreed to rest the Challenge for this month and ask for a new challenger for October’s meeting to go up against John Holden. A challenger was found in Dave who suggested “Animals” and we would see what Dave would do to knock John off this very lofty spot. Balloon animals maybe? Dave let everyone know that he did in fact have a gig on Saturday which apparently went very well so perhaps “the cheapest in his price range” tagline is working now. Next month is the Far Away Competition and apparently Mike Pettitt won’t be taking part so there’s a chance for someone else. We understand there’s some magical coaching going on in Bexhill though so look out, the trophy could still end up that end of the County! Members were reminded that subs were now overdue (should have been paid in July) and that the rent for the hall for the year was due. Subs this year would cover this amount. Nicky jumped up to remind everyone about the Annual Dinner. Cheques should be made payable to ACES and forwarded to John Holden with menus to Nicky ASAP. She let everyone know that Martin and herself will be going on holiday for a week from 24 September and it would be good if things could be sorted before they go as magic commitments when they get back will leave little time to arrange things. Dave introduced Wayne and after a long absence from lecturing in Sussex, he was warmly welcomed by the intimate gathering. The Committee were somewhat disappointed that members of the other Sussex societies did not join us for the evening having widely advertised this lecture but a new friend Tom had come down all the way from London having seen the lecture advertised on Magic Week. Wayne started off the evening by explaining a little about his MS and that this had limited his use of one of his hands so during the lecture there would be a great deal of assistants helping him with the routines he was to share. Showing us Echo with Martin, Pom-pom sticks with Dave (accompanied by some seriously funny patter), an Invisible Deck with Pat and plenty of other bits and bobs. Dave helped with the 10p bag routine which was very useful and I think there will be members using this alot in the future. Nicky assisted with a book test which was a reasonably priced version compared to others available and a very clever card choice routine, again I think members would be interested in both of these. After a short break for refreshments, Wayne opened the floor for a question and answer session entitled “Ask Me Anything” and members did. From his health, to friendships with Joe Pasquale – the Las Vegas toilet story was excellent and had everyone in stitches – to inspirational performers he admired and a little about those who he did not! Interspersed with some more magical bits and bobs, the evening was extremely busy and Wayne was a delight to meet. Sharp wit in a session on dealing with hecklers was very funny and ACES members won’t forget to use No. 34 where appropriate! No Dave, not kids shows! So ended a really successful evening for everyone. Wayne was a delight and Marianne was brilliant. Louie obviously loves chocolate biscuits which a few members couldn’t wait to offer him – I don’t know if he was actually allowed chocolate biscuits but he certainly enjoyed them. Wayne would be at Eastbourne accompanying many members but for those of us not going, he would again by at Portsmouth Jumbo Day in November. Meeting ended 10.10pm Written by: Nicky Lewis |
