Newsletter: 70 for June 2002

Book your seat now for the visit of the Southdown Magicians on JUNE 12th Don’t miss out on this exciting night led by our old friend Stan Reynolds - I am sure it will be good - so why am I not going to be there myself! Well it’s a little matter of meeting up with some other friends that was booked up a year ago in Kos, Greece. We meet up every year now on roughly the same date for all of us to wind down and for me to do some real magic! My apologies to all for being absent on the night - with glass in hand I shall think of you all!

Please make an effort to fill in the nomination forms and resolutions which I am sending out with this issue, now is your chance to have your say.

After the usual notices we had the trophy competition which was on Balloons - Dave came a gallant second swallowing his balloon whole! Something must be done about Stuart though, he must be nobbled somehow - he’s on a winning streak still - just as Stan was last year! Malcolm Russell challenged him to a duel of glass next time!

Then it was onto the main event of the evening, the Tony Richard’ s Trophy. Dave started off with the old gag of any number 1 - 5 fingers under a silk then went on to Multiplying wand with Alison and a Zig Zag Card.

Geoff did his stuff by doing a thimbles routine finishing up with a bottle, he is usually found on the bottle, then Alison helped him with a ball over the shoulder routine and a paper tear, only Alison couldn’t quite tear hers, string to silk to fountain of silks and rainbow jumbo silk and finishing up with his card manips. After the break and raffle it was Bob’s turn: He produced 4 giant card castles with the A.C.E.S. on them, then a flea routine with jumping silk, onto a card trick with a pack vanish and an invisible pack finally showing us that the A.C.E.S. on the castles were now the word TONY.

Reg Parker was last to perform starting off with an egg to bra then a Jumbo three card trick, onto his famous long piece of rope that came from all parts of his body, a locked padlock in a goblet was found to have transposed itself onto the stem of itself, Alison again helped out by then she must have been bewildered! She made sure that Reg did his quarter Jumbo card appeared on time revealing a selected card when all seemed lost, It must have been a tough decision for the judges to pick out a winner and it was so close but Bob triumphed in the end - he must be cluttered up at home with all the trophies he has won over the last couple of years and he has only been in magic for that amount of time.

Please be at the ACES Annual General Meeting on the 10th of JULY. Just so that you can have your say. As you may know or perhaps you don’t realise that each member is also a member of the committee / council - this is the way we decided it 10 years ago and it has worked that way with every body having their say, Yes it‘s 10 years since we first met! That is something to celebrate after the struggle we first had to get going. Tony would be pleased. See you July 10th
