Newsletter: 136 for December 2007 Happy Christmas to all! Dave welcomed everyone along tonight and it was great to see so many friends and family join us. There were apologies from Mike and Jeanne Elvin and Reg Maskell who unfortunately has been unwell so we all send him our best wishes and love. Martin introduced Daisy Asquith to everyone and apologised that she would be filming much of the comings and goings tonight for her forthcoming documentary featuring him and Nicky. Who knows you could all be stars by the time the programme airs – can you cope with any more bookings Mike P? Dave read a lovely note from everyone at Fairlight thanking us for the show and announced a couple of notices from the other societies including the Ali Bongo lecture at the Sussex and a great time had by all at Southdowns recently with Michael Symes. Apparently (so Dave told us!) there was a fantastic warm-up act to his entertainment although Martin and I weren’t quite sure about this one having seen his routine at Tunbridge Wells over the last couple of weeks. Honesty, well done Dave –and if you haven’t seen the photos, check out Southdowns website. Before the Challenge, Dave and Martin were pleased to present each member with their certificate of membership to ACES and Bob was overhead to say that he had been a young man when he requested his! Hope it was worth the wait Bob! To start the evening and to delight Daisy, Lynn was up first to show us her first challenge of “Ribbons”. None of us had met Monty the monkey and he proved to be extremely clever albeit colourblind! He read Hazel’s mind of her chosen colour with skill and determination. Well done Lynn, jolly good routine. John (aka Pierre) was up next with his linking ribbon set. Pierre always makes me laugh as he is a great alter-ego for John and I enjoy the work that goes into the practice makes perfect with these routines. Excellent stuff again John and no doubt the voting would be even closer than normal! Results later ... After a few Christmas tricks by loads of members including Bob’s famous mind reading Christmas match cards and Martin flying and Christmas story we all settled down to enjoy the vast array of grub supplied by the members even though there appeared to be a glut of sausage rolls and chocolate cake! Mmmm, lovely! Directly after the food, a few members appeared to have disappeared only to re-appear on stage singing! If you’ve never seen Dave dressed as a football player, Martin in safari get-up, Lynn dressed as a doctor, Patrick a clown and me in a party frock singing you haven’t seen anything. I sincerely hope Daisy doesn’t use that in the programme as it could spoil all our magical reputations instantly... Votes for the Challenge were cast and members polled on the results and after having to use all my fingers and toes, the results came out very close. Lynn had unfortunately come second by a whisker to Pierre and Martin immediately challenged him to jelly in January’s meeting. Heaven help us, what is our President up to now ... goodness knows. With plenty more Christmas magic and mayhem, things were however a little quieter than our usual festive party with Brenda and Mike (I must say I kind of missed musical chairs, even though Paula normally wins!) everyone enjoyed themselves. So on behalf of your committee and especially Martin and I, enjoy a smashing Christmas and New Year and we’ll see you in January. Meeting finished at 10pm. Written by: Nicky Lewis |
