Newsletter: 128 for April 2007 Well there was a warm welcome awaiting the ACES this month with Dave announcing that tonight would be memorable. First half would be over to Nicky for her lady’s night (shame we didn’t have more performers) and in the second half it would be over to Royal T John for a card teach-in. Before the meeting started proper Martin announced that he had seen Robin and that he (Robin) had told him to expect some figures for our April meeting. It was hoped by the committee that once these were received, the outstanding queries raised by members would be satisfactorily dealt with and that we could then put the matter to bed. We were hoping for two shows in the near future. Dave was arranging one in Albourne and Geoff was looking for volunteers for a 50:50 show in Fairlight. Please get in touch with Dave, Geoff or myself if you are interested in performing or just helping us with stage management, curtains, etc. Challenge was “Chairs” and Zac started off by performing an excellent mentalist routine using an Argos catalogue. Apart from his sometimes quiet voice and a few nerves, this was performed very well and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Patrick had another chair routine up his sleeve and asked various members to sit on a chosen chair. The only one remaining at the end of the routine was the chosen one Patrick had predicted prior to the meeting starting. Another good challenge this month and we waited with baited breath to see what the result would be – I can’t believe it’s always as close as they say but we would see. The evening started off with the lady who needed no introduction by Nicky with a fantastic performance by Brenda ably assisted by Mike. She showed us many of the things we love her for including silk effects and many others but the ESP mind-reading was a new one for her and she performed this exceptionally well. My only comment was that Mike really should have been wearing sparkles as you guys expect us ladies to assist wearing them ... I await Mike’s excuse for the lack of feathers and gems next month! Second up was Lynn who has said for many months that she wanted to become a full member of the society. Lynn was supported (as always) by Patrick and her finale of a spiked card on sword was great. She looked like a real swashbuckler to me so perhaps there’s a part in the next Pirates of the Carribean film? The Committee were asked to adjourn to discuss her audition and after a few short minutes, they had decided she was very welcome and congratulated her. Lastly was me. I did choose Martin to help seeing as he’s got me out many a scrape in the past so I knew I was in safe hands. He had suggested using this as my audition so we showed the audience a black box with nothing more inside than two wizards costumes and an enormous magic wand. After dressing up and many wands appearing, the box was opened again to mystery reveal our beautiful white rabbit Angel. Short but sweet but the Committee were very kind and have invited me to take up full membership which is very much appreciated. Lovely coffee and chocolate biscuits finished and the votes were in for the Challenge. It had been close and Patrick was deemed the winner with an immediate challenge for next month of “Penetration” by Mike. Goodness knows what’s going to happen here. John’s part of the evening encouraged everyone to have a go and the few routines he showed us. Full details will be available soon on our “Members Only” section but suffice to say the boy hasn’t lost his touch when it comes to cards. Everyone appeared to have a great evening and we finished a little late but with a little more knowledge of the mysteries of Royal T John. That’s all from me for this month. Enjoy a lovely Easter – don’t eat too much chocolate and we’ll see you in April. Written by: Nicky Lewis |
