Newsletter: 127 for March 2007

Members of ACES were invited to an EGM prior to our meeting this evening so this month’s newsletter will be shorter than normal.

Welcome to potential new member, David Croucher who did pop in to see us last year and hopefully will now become a full member.

The long awaited Challenge Trophy carried forward from last month showed Patrick and Martin with “Tricks from America”. Martin started the evening with an amazing superhero routine involving Stan as Chicken Nugget with his mentor Martin as Super Chicken. Lots of laughs and unusual performance from them both. Patrick followed with the diary thing. This time it really shouldn’t have been a close run thing... but we would find out after the break.

Reg Moores took to the floor to show everyone the speakers that unfortunately had not worked at the Sussex recently by Don Simpson and at £4.99 they certainly did appear very good value for money. Tescos was the place to get them.

The main event tonight was our annual Tom Hooper Trophy for Close-Up competition. Who would beat Stan this year?

Competitor number 1 was Martin wearing his sparkly suit. He had decided to work really hard on this and showed everyone some very new routines including his special Timewarp with a twist, new Jay Sankey “Nailed” and marked coin in a box. His final performance was a rhyming cup and ball routine.

Brenda was on next with an entire routine on a Valentine Day theme starting with a silk to rose and using Lynn to chose a special quartz ring.

Mike “I really do have a trick for every occasion” Pettett moved closer to the audience to show us a good ten minutes of dice, dice and more dice.

Mike Elvin finshed off with some card telepathy and many other things but I honestly think the most scary moment of the evening was the time when Patrick was desperate to hold Mike’s hand for some reason. Very odd.

Votes counted and to Martin’s despair, he didn’t win anything! Patrick beat him in the Challenge and was instantly re-challenged by Zac to Chairs for the next meeting and Mike P. won the close-up. Never mind Martin there’s always next time.

To those of you going to Blackpool see you there and to the wives, partners, mistresses of everyone else please get your thinking caps on for my Ladie’s Night in March. Give me a ring if you want to participate. So far we have Lynn and Brenda who will be assisted by their better halves this time. Also don’t forward your deck of cards for Royal T John’s card teach-in.

Have a good month and see you in March.
