A letter has been received from Reg Parker’s wife saying how thrilled he was to receive his “Life Long Membership” certificate and how it boosted his morale. Stuart brought along some info/pictures of a website company who produce bags, mugs, note pads etc with logos printed on them. He has already ordered some items for himself so the ACES logo is already set up on their system if anyone is interested in ordering any items. The website is http://www.cafepress.com/aces_magic. Next meeting on 11th May is the Tony Richards Memorial Trophy (comedy and children’s magic). Martin then handed over to the Host of the evening, Jon Cann, Southdown’s President, who entertained the audience throughout the show with various effects, readings and jokes. The first performer was Alan Hatcher who has performed at ACES once before. He started off the evening’s entertainment with some Mentalism effects. In one effect he asked Dave Lambert to help him out and also gave an envelope to a member of the audience. He produced a bag containing three pieces of fruit – a Lemon, Orange and Apple. He asked Dave to choose two items of fruit and the un-chosen Lemon was put back into the bag. He was then asked to give Alan one of the remaining two pieces of fruit and he passed over the orange which meant he was left holding the apple. The prediction was then taken out the envelope and David read it out to the audience “I am holding the apple, you are holding the orange and the Lemon is in the bag”. Uncle Stan the Magic Man (Stan Reynolds) was next on stage dazzling us with his fluorescent stripped suite, baseball cap & Harry Potter glasses and proceeded to change rabbits into top hats. Tom Wood closed the first half performing cups & balls and finished his routine by producing 3 oranges. Following a tea/coffee break was this month’s Challenge “Elvis”. Steve performed first using an Elvis pack of cards. He asked Dave Lambert to shuffle the deck and whilst he did this gave a prediction to Stuart for safe keeping. He explained that the prediction was of Elvis’ single position in an old music charts. Dave cut the deck in two, chose one half and dealt these into three piles. He then turned over the top card of each pile to show the 2, 3 and 7. The prediction was then taken out showing the chart position to be No. 2 and No. 37. Robin showed the audience two cards one with “Elvis” written on it and the second card read “Presley” which was placed on the bottom of the pack. He then turned over all five cards in turn and they all read “Elvis”. He then turned over one card to show “Presley” again and proceeded to turn over all five cards and they all now read “Presley”. He finished off by turning over a final card which now read “Lives”. Stuart Harley was Southdown’s next performer and he entertained the audience producing a bottle of gin, tonic and lemon, pulled a six foot card out of a paper bag, performed the Bullet Catch with the help of Tom and finished his performance by sawing a member of the audience in half. Alan Hatcher returned to the stage this time performing more traditional magic – linking rings, a card effect and lastly passing a sword through neck. Lee’s was the last performance of the evening and he performed a number of card effects and mentalism. He showed the audience a normal red backed deck of cards. He asked Tom to take out one card and show the audience. The card was placed back into the centre of the pack. Lee then asked someone to choose their favourite colour which was “blue” and he then went through the backs of the cards until he found one blue backed card which he turned over and showed it to be Tom’s chosen card. The winner of this month’s challenge was Steve and the new challenge is Reg Maskell with Fruit. Written by: |
