Newsletter: 101 for January 2005

Martin opened the meeting with apologies from John Holden, Peter Bennett, Paul Holmes and Andrew Jeffrey.

The evening began with the monthly challenge “eggs”. Dave took to the stage first and, after putting on his fez, managed to include the word egg at every opportunity in his opening speech. Shelley went up on stage to help Dave with his effect. Dave showed a black bag to the audience and asked Shelley to check it was empty. Dave then asked Shelley to put her toes and knees together, flap her arms like wings and make a clucking sound. He then waved the bag behind Shelley and when he reached into the bag an egg had appeared. He repeated the effect and made a further egg appear.

Zac started his challenge by showing the audience a box which contained a draw, which he opened to show it was empty. He waved over the box and when he opened the draw for the second time, it contained three cups and three furry balls. He explained that the furry balls had been laid by three hairy chickens, therefore making them three furry eggs. Zac proceeded with the cups and balls routine making the eggs appear and disappear.

All members were asked to vote for their winner of this month’s challenge trophy in the break.

Martin then handed the evening over to Mike and Brenda who were running the Christmas activities and in true style they started off the festivities by putting on their Santa hats.

Mike explained the first game “Name the Magicians”. A board contained twelve pictures giving clues of the magician’s names and he asked everyone to complete the quiz during the evening and there was a prize for the person who correctly guessed the most names.

The evening then moved on to “musical chairs” and “the minute walk”. Four people were invited up to try and walk a certain distance and time it so it took exactly one minute. Dave won the first round and Peter Lambert the second.

“Pass the parcel” was next on the agenda. A playing card had been placed inside each layer of paper and the number of the card corresponded with a numbered pocket on an advent calendar. There was a card placed in each numbered pocket with a prize written on it, though these prizes didn’t turn out to be quite what everyone first thought.

Jon and Gordon had fun building towers with paper plates and plastic cups and Gordon proved to be the champion with nine stories of cups. In the second round Stuart managed to beat Sue but he couldn’t quite beat Gordon’s record.

“Simon Says” and “Musical Statues” completed the first half of the evening.

Everyone tucked into the buffet, which all members had contributed to. Martin then announced Dave as the winner of this month’s challenge. Stuart challenged Dave to “bottles” for January, and the raffle was drawn.

At the start of the second half the answers to “Name the Magicians” were announced and the joint winners were Sue & Paul Leacy and Jon Cann.

Mike then took to the stage to entertain the audience. He had two sets of cards, four cards with Father Christmas on and the other four with Reindeers. He took one Reindeer and one Father Christmas card and placed them amongst the opposite packs but when he turned both packs around and counted them one pack still contained four Father Christmas cards and the other four Reindeer cards.

He repeated the trick but moved two cards across into each pile and the same happened again, four Father Christmas cards remained in one pile and four Reindeers in the other.

He repeated the trick for a final time and moved three cards across. When he turned each pack around and counted them there were four Father Christmas and four Reindeers cards but they had changed places.

To close the evening Brenda performed an effect. Brenda took one large card which was folded in half but when it was opened had nothing written on the inside. She then took lots of small pieces of coloured paper and pushed them into the inside of the cards, waved her magic fingers in the air and when the card was opened up the words “Merry Christmas to you all” was written inside in multi-colour.

Martin wished everyone a merry Christmas.
