Newsletter: 91 for March 2004

The Magicians of Basingstoke are running their Annual Festival of Magic One Day Convention on Sunday 25th April this year at Kempshott Village Hall in Basingstoke and they are asking if any of the ACES want to enter the Close-up Championship of Southern England. If anyone is interested in representing the ACES please let me know as I have an address and form to fill in for you.

Next meeting is on March 10th and it is a Dealer Dem come Lecture by KAYMAR Magic. It is not an open meeting as I expect there will be a few secrets shared! Just bring some money!

Last meeting was the Close-up Competition - I thought there wasn’t going to be enough entrants but as usual the ACES didn’t let the side down. There were in fact 7 competitors and it means I can only barely sketch over what they did. But Before that it was nice to see Bob and Pat back with us – they both had a lousy chest virus shortly after the New Year and were both laid up for a few days.

The Monthly Challenge cup was finally wrested from Brenda’s hands by Mike Pettitt after doing his best to spike Zac through the neck. Brenda did a dice through wand effect. Mike was duly challenged to do match box trick next month by Stuart.

In the close up competition Stan prevail to become the winner but there was literally only one vote in it. He was on last but one doing 2 in the hand 1 in the pocket with nuts and bolts, plus cord and washer, a card trick and several other gags and tricks.

First on was Reg Maskell with his wonderful coins across and a type of "My drink trick", Dizzy dominoes and spot paddles.

Jonathan Caan was next with a card and lie detector routine, a trick with 4 cards, handkerchief and ring found in box and a ring and lace penetration.

Mike Pettitt came on and performed A jokers and Jacks trick, changing colour penknives, an assembly of cards under a newspaper and a £5.00 note shredded and restored effect.

Bob Rickard closed the first half with some nuts and bolts in tubes, a card trick, a 5p to £1.00 coin transpo and another card trick.

After the tea break we had Mike Elvin on doing a "That’s it" prediction, using a finger chopper on a victim who appeared to have already experienced the same effect but with less success! Then a Brainwave effect and he did a cartoon effect with a pack of cards , finishing off with a Voodoo type of effect.

Dave Patterden, who had nobly deputised for our absent chairman at short notice perform in his zany way a three card monte routine, a jumbo card trick and finished with an effect with 3 helpers cutting randomly to the other ACES.

A new trick has been added to the site Sticky Stuff. By Royal T. John
