Newsletter: 86 for October 2003

Next meeting, on OCTOBER 8th is the Far Away Competition, open to all members of the ACES. We have got 2 promises and 2 other half promises. We do need some others that will do a 10 to 15 minutes act from the floor or the stage. You saw what the Portsmouth Magic Circle did last month , surely the ACES can do as well!

Last meeting, The Portsmouth Magic Circle did us proud – it was one of the best evenings ever and the audience were was in fine form. There were at least 40 there excluding the P. M. C - Pat and Bob were kept very busy and are worth a vote of thanks.

Martin introduced Ron Stace who then compered the show after an elegant production of a button hole flower.

First on was their president David Bonsall with ring to car keys purse twice, bending spoons a la Uri Geller only better, mind reading with cards, and A version of Ali Bongos 3 predictions with the cards being mixed face up and down at random.

Second on was Harold Straker doing more mental stuff with Christian names on backs of cards, 5 walnuts and a bag one person being divined who had the golden nut and a version of the diary trick.

Greg Williamson came on next – a young lad of 13 who belied his age with expert billiard ball manipulations and a good version of cups and balls with some new ideas in it. He is good now. What will he be like in a few years time?

Just before the interval Peter Leonard came on with invisible dart to dart board, a number being turning out to be the right one winning Brenda a box of goodies. He also did a couple of mental effects with an old Indian pack of cards which you used to be able to buy in Woolworths and finished off with the 11 card trick – I think by Eddie Victor.

After the tea and coffee and some useful social chat we had the second half, first on being David Gemmell doing a Medallion trick and finding the right card, plus a few other card tricks with some good humour.

Next on was Frank McBroome with some more mental stuff including a Robbery story and a pound coin finding it in another nest of boxes. He also did a book test plus moving a figure about on 9 cards and other mental stuff!

John Mohamed was on next with more mental items using cards etc and a do as I do effect with cards.

Last on was the Zany comic Denis Goodwin. You shouldn’t blink when he is on – Duck hat / Irish razor / burnt hankies / mobile phone gag / Jumbo cards and Magic rhymes / Matching ESP cards and finishing off with a comedy straight jacket escape.

Altogether the time passed too quickly. Thanks to all of them.

Next month on 26th OCTOBER Portsmouth Magic Circle are holding their one day sale and auction along with a lecture by Terry Herbert and a good gala show to boot including Loki. I have just got more info about the above – if you are on the internet then go to the following address: www.aibm.co.uk/JumboDay/JumboDay.htm
