Newsletter: 85 for September 2003 The meeting in August was a sale of props , tricks and books etc. There were about 10 members who had stuff to sell and they nearly out numbered the buyers. There was some good stuff there if you knew what you were looking for and there were some good bargains to be had - I don’t know how well the sellers did – there seemed to be a lot of stuff left when they packed up. Because there was so much to sell it wouldn’t have been feasible to have the audience because there were other things to do. There were a couple of apologies from Robin who was basking in the sun in France and from Tom Hooper whom I was assured was keeping well. Programs done by Stuart were available and if you didn’t get yours then ask me for one next time we meet. We had an early tea and coffee break and then it was challenge time for Brenda and Stuart on the theme of ’Cartoons’. Brenda came on first and did some comedy cartoons with all the gags, such as the worm going over a razor blade and finally did a vase and made it into a cone from which she produced some real silks and then poked them into the stems making a nice show of flowers. Stuart did an effect which was somewhat ’forced’ on a couple of the members getting them to choose a ship in a bottle using a pack of cards. Brenda won again and was immediately challenged by Dave to a competition on ’animals’ – he had just bought a new act with animal tricks included so was feeling supremely confident! After the trophy was presented Reg Moores gave us an interesting talk about the ’Holiday on Ice’ show which started in America as one of the rolling shows then eventually going all over the world. Reg was at some point the lighting man in the world touring shows. He had to learn loads of different languages in order to control the spot lights etc for the performances and this had to be done instantly to foreign workers in their own language and even dialect! He gave a demonstration of his ability to do this by speaking several languages I didn’t know! There had to be immense organisation before each show to cart everything needed for each show and hundreds of thousands of pounds were spent even in those days. The audience asked a lot of questions and it showed that they were interested. Thanks Reg. Next month on Wednesday 10th September we have the Portsmouth Magic Circle visiting us on a return visit. We are making it an open evening so friends and family are welcome to join us. Geoff and I are travelling up to Southport on 24th Sept. to the I. B. M. convention and I am looking forward as I not been there before and have heard that the venue is very good – the latest booking there to do lecture is Mike Ammar, the brilliant American magician and lecturer. There are a lot of names I don’t know scheduled to be there from all over the world. They have altered the days so that is now starting on the Weds. evening and goes on till the Sunday night. Sunday 26th October is the Portsmouth Jumbo sale ane one day convention – more news on this later when I get it. See you all on the 10th September. A new effect has been added to the site, it’s by John and it’s called Eight Kings Ride Again. Written by: John Taylor |
