Newsletter: 82 for June 2003

We had less members at the May meeting for some reason and there were only two members taking part in the Tony Richard’s competition but that didn’t stop it from being, not just good but excellent – pity some of the members missed it all!

First of all though we had the notices with spoken reports of the two exchange visits to other magic clubs – written ones appear later. The ACES performed well on both occasions and Stan thanked us for our visit to the Southdown Magicians and we had an email from Ron Stace of the Portsmouth Magic Society thanking us for a good evening and he said they will try and do the same for us next October.

We then had our usual monthly competition and last month it was between Martin and Mike Pettitt. Martin borrowed a coin, had it signed and then found the same coin in a nest of boxes – even though he hadn’t been near it!

Mike did the coins to glasses – a pint pot upside down over a smaller glass – he produce 4 coins onto a stand and one by one they disappeared only to be heard arriving in the glasses. All this was done to the music – “Money, Money, Money”. Mike won with this and was challenged by Stan to a match of “Lottery”? More money down the drain!

Then we had the main competition and it turned out to be a match between Mike Pettitt and Geoff. Mike doing a children’s routine with a Clock type of Dye box and for comedy he performed a chewing gum packages trick – Stan picking one package out of 50 and then sitting on it while Mike had a card chosen with its corner torn off and after a while the card was found in the wrapper of the package chosen by Stan.

Geoff came on next and performed his 8 thimble routine and followed up with a paper tear – a disappearing salt and salty pour – then a drawing of myself with my mouth moving? why no glasses?

He finished of with his card production finale. Geoff managed to win the competition by a short head.

Stuart should be sending out new up to date address lists within the next month.

Next month on June 11th of course is the infamous Officer` s evening – any thing can happen and almost certainly will – I shall have to miss it all because I will be on holiday! I am hoping the president, the treasurer, the chairman, the publicity officer, the auditor and anybody else Mike Elvin can rake in will be performing.

Don’t Miss It!

The following meeting on July 9th is the A.G.M. and you need to bring your thinking caps with you to suggest all the ideas, and future evenings you want.

You all should have or get soon a nomination and resolution form to fill in regarding any changes of the officers or rules. Please do this, don’t leave it to the other guys!

28 April 03 Portsmouth Magic Circle

This is the second time we have been to Portsmouth to perform and once again the show went very well.

For those who have not been to the Portsmouth Community Centre, this is a good venue for this type of show. The performing area is at floor level and the room we were in had screens, so performers can hide out the way & get ready for their act. Generally I feel this show went very well.

Bob Rickard, Stan Reynolds, Reg Parker, & Geoff Hunt went on in the first half. Jonathan Cann, Andrew Jeffrey, Robin Toft, all went on in the second half. Dave Pattenden was the compere & John Taylor was the Stage Manager. Andrew had a new mentalism act. It was good to see him again, because we don’t see him as often as we would like to. Stuart took his camera and filmed the first half & some of the second.

I think this could be a useful technique to help improve our performances.

Perhaps we could use a camera as a teaching aid within the club in future?

Now there is an idea for a future meeting.

The Portsmouth Club have a big day in October, and if you haven’t been to the Portsmouth Magic Day which they have every year, try to get to it. In the daytime they have dealers & a Magic jumble sale, where you can pick up some real magic bargains, enough to set up a new act. They also have a show in the evening.

Wednesday 07.05.03 Southdown Magicians at Turners Hill.

This is the first time I have been to this venue at the Ark, and I was impressed by the community centre. It is fairly new, about 2 years old.

Since I have known the Southdown Magicians (about 13 years) they have held their meetings in Three Bridges, and also Longleys in Crawley. They currently meet in the Ark, but in a different room to the one we performed in. The room in the Ark was spacious, & the performing area was on the floor level. Stan Reynolds is the President of "Southdown Magicians" and he organized the evening. This was the first time ACES have performed for the Southdown Magicians, although they have visited ACES on one occasion recently. They will be visiting us again in due course.

The first half had Brenda Trowell, Martin Lewes, Robin Toft, and Geoff Hunt. The second half had Reg Parker, Mike Pettitt, & Bob Rickard, The compere was Dave Pattenden & the Stage Manager was John Taylor. I’d like to wish a special "Well done" to Brenda & Mike Pettit, as this was their first show performing for ACES at one of our external shows.

We also discovered another talent. Emily. Robin’s daughter. Her comment’s and views during Robin’s act were really funny. As Robin said "I’ve brought my own heckler". Keep her in the act Robin.

The evening went well and everyone enjoyed themselves. I would like to thank all the performers, and people helping, for taking part in two more great ACES shows.
