Newsletter: 81 for May 2003 We had another good evening last month with most of us doing something – to those that didn`t its just that we ran out of time again – it wasn`t that we didn`t want you. Please bring along, to the next meeting, what you were going to do in the way of “Card Moves” – we may need you if we don`t get enough for the competition. It will be the Tony Richard`s Memorial competition and the prize is a large shield for showing off for one year and a small one to be presented at the annual dinner. The competition is on the 14th May and should be about comedy or children or both but we are not too strict on that and it should be from 5 minutes to 12 minutes. So what did we do last meeting ? – Well Mike won the book competition but it was a closely fought out duel of wits – Robin Thompson again dressed up for the part and had some help in divining a word from a book, the page chosen at the random throwing of a card into the book. Mike Pettitt did a more elaborate routine with divining a word from a choice of books and finding the chosen page half burnt – the other half was in an envelop where there should have been a chosen card – clever ! Next month it`s Martin versus Mike Pettitt and it`s “MONEY” ! After that competition we stared off our evening of “Card Moves” with Martin starting off with his “Chinese rising Card” then it was onto David Pattenden`s palmed card into pocket - {Paul Leacy was on after that with a top change trick – with explanations of how to do it. Our guest Lynn Thomas did an effect with cards strung on a ribbon which was admired by several people followed by Geoff finishing off the first half with his famous “Look in my pocket” – “Look in your hand” – “Look on the table” routine. After the coffee/tea break we carried on with the card moves with my “Trans-four-mation” getting a showing – I think I lost most of the audience when I tried to explain it! Mike Elvin carried on with a three card trick with a flap and then young Zac came on and did a type of pile trick and a “do as I do” effect. Stan had a pile of boxes of cards but only got through three of them, explaining a “win or lose” principle along with names on the backs of cards, plus “my card, your card”. Mike Pettitt came on next and did his blindfolded card routine – very good. We are looking forward to visiting The Portsmouth Magic Circle on the 28th of April – you won`t get the news on what it was like there till next month – We want to get this letter on our web-site before then and the same applies to our visit to the Southdown Magicians on the 7th May. If any one has any bits of news relevant to magic or the ACES please let me know – preferably by email – it`s easier to copy that way! A few years ago Mike Elvin wrote up his life story for us – Has nobody else had a life! See you on the 14th of May – Oh . it’s an OPEN EVENING! WE REALLY NEED SOME CHILDREN IN THE AUDIENCE! Mars Men is a new trick added to the site this month, created by John. Written by: John Taylor |
