Newsletter: 80 for April 2003

This next meeting is the moment to show off how well you have practiced your card moves or sleights – bring along a pack of cards and show us your expertise at handling cards or just bring a pack of card and let someone else do the hard work!

Really it would be nice if you could do a couple or so card tricks with your favourite card move or subtlety - it doesn’t have to be complicated or difficult.

The next meeting is on 9th of April .

We had another busy night at the last meeting and there was quite a crowd there again. It should have been Kaymar Magic but they will be there next year! Booked.

Peter Bennett said that he has some children’s tricks for sale. Phone 01273 832638.

Mike Elvin has almost organised the 2 exchange visit to PMC and Southdown– the performers anyway! PMC are coming back to us on 20th September this year.

Basingstoke Magic Circle have invited us to send a member to their Southern Championship Close up Competition – Stuart may be taking this up.

We had the usual challenge trophy competition and this time new member Robin Thompson triumphed against Stan. Robin dressed up for the part in pointed hat and glossy jacket, he did the Chinese Rice bowls which I hadn’t seen for ages.

Stan did a wine and water plus Lexicon card routine. Next month it is Mike Pettitt taking on Robin on with “BOOKS”.

Paul Leacy did his audition to join the ACES and performed it very well – he had turned Professional recently and it showed! He did a routine with a box, padlock and 4 keys – some ring and rope effects – his own cups and balls routine and finished of with his well known juggling of three balls. Welcome to the club Paul!

Geoff Hunt our President then talked about his visits to the Blackpool Convention and the one day convention at Bournemouth.

Then it was onto the members night with Mike Pettitt doing mostly card tricks – one of them with large card with some other small playing cards on them with him guessing right ever time a spectator picked one – He finished off with a signed card in wallet. Bob went one next and did the Diary and playing card effect, Stan found his designated card (the one at his favourite date) in an envelope at the front of the diary – he then did a prediction trick and then ended by finding a selected card in a glass of salt or sugar?

Martin the brought on prospective new member Zac who performed a colour cube in box – a zig zag wand – a card trick – and finished up with a sponge ball effect – not bad for a twelve year old in front of a hard boiled group of magicians!

‘Don’t try this at home’ was the cry as Reg Moores performed his somewhat dangerous red hot poked licking with his tongue – Paul Leacy was continuously heating it up to a red hot pitch with a blow torch while Reg did his patter.

Reg Maskell then did a nice silks and painting job and the ended with a lovely Linking rings routine.

Stuart took David Bowden`s photo and the card that David had picked also appeared on the photo. He also did a couple of other card tricks.

Don’t forget ‘OKLAHOMA’ at Clair Hall, Haywards Heath next May 6th – 10th!

3 of our members are in it! See Jonathan Caan for details – maybe some concessions!

And finally, a new trick has been added to the site this month, Memory Spoofing. By Royal. T. John.
