ACES meeting 11 November 2009

Dave welcomed everyone along and was pleased to see Robin Carr from the Southdowns and a couple of guests. As we had so much to get through tonight, he had agreed with David Croucher to postpone the challenge competition until the new year.

John Holden gave us an overview of finances for the Annual Dinner and we came out on top by over £50 which was excellent news. Many thanks to the girls for their efforts in selling raffle tickets which always boosts our funds. There was a vote of thanks by the members to Brenda for her excellent Halloween themed warm-up which we all thoroughly enjoyed.

Dave then got on with the preparations for the ACES next three major events and after a bit of tooing and froing we managed to sort out the visit to Portsmouth, our Christmas show at the hall (everyone needs to play their part in promoting this please! Posters are available to put up and local press and radio would be spoken to) and finally the show at Gladstone Court in December. All sorted within ½ hour of the meeting starting so good work Dave. There was a request for alternative raffle ticket sellers for 9th December and Hazel Holden agreed to take this on. Pauline Bowden may be in a position to help but would let us know as soon as possible.

It was then on with the main event of the evening “Snap, Crackle and Pop” and first up was Colin playing snap with Nicky using French tarot cards. Lovely cards and well performed.

Dave Croucher then took the floor with the fastest card trick in the world assisted by John Holden. He then went on to perform a bottle caps matrix for snap, matching card backs for crackle and some wand tip magic for pop. Very good as usual and looking forward to seeing Norman again on Monday.

Mike P.’s performance started with a snapped pencil, a crackled paper bag and a popped balloon! He followed this with a prediction of three bags of breakfast cereal whilst being assisted by Mike E. mixing matching cards, the prediction and card matched. Enjoyed this Mike although where were the rice krispies ...

President Martin was our last performer and donning a natty “SNAP” t-shirt (not however bought specially as he already owned it!) started off with snap performing a broken and restored water biscuit with Pauline, he continued with rice krispies using a rice bowl and appearing milk and sugar for crackle and finished with pop turning water into coca cola.

Good interpretations all and after tea it was time to introduce Paul Martin from the Southdowns who was here to give us a short lecture on putting colour into magic. There were so many effects and explanations that it is easier to simply list the performances which I hope will jog members’ memories:

Cameleon glass

Appearing and disappearing knot on coloured rope

Appearing and linking coloured silks

Fountain of silks (about 70 apparently)

Appearing bottle and glass of Champagne

Restored rope

Paul finished his lecture offering advice on silks and thread work.

The whole evening was extremely busy but very enjoyable with many going home with ideas to use in the future.

Before the evening finished Dave reminded everyone to promote the show, (there was also a request for decent raffle prizes) and everyone can still bring their Christmas cards for distribution. Thomas A Beckett Hall would be open from 7pm to enable performers to set up in good time for a prompt start at 8pm.

Meeting closed at 10pm.

Update on visit to Portsmouth & District Magic Circle 16 November 2009 by Mike Elvin

I would like to thank everybody for taking part, and thank the Portsmouth magic circle for having us.

The show was a success with a mixture of entertainment I would particularly like to thank Colin Inns as this was the first time he has performed with us other than for only ACES members.

Hopefully this will be the first of many such shows for him. Congratulations Colin.

For the rest of the performers it was job well done.

The compare for the evening was Dave Pattenden whom kept everyone going, and going and…..

1st act David Croucher – An entertaining and zany mime performance by his alter ego “Norman”

2nd act Colin Inns - An intriguing performance with a puzzle. It involved two keen helpers and one other whom wanted all the glory

3rd act Stan Reynolds – He did so well they wouldn’t let him go and he ended up staying in Portsmouth for the night

Second Half

4th Geoff Hunt – The manipulator at work. Well Done Geoff

5th Mike Elvin – Card Magic by yours truly

6th Martin Lewis – Martin tore up Rod Newman’s money and ended up shuffling pork sausages

It was good to see “David Foulser” (from Hove) and “Nicky Lewis” from (Worthing) whom travelled to see us all.

It was also great to see fellow magic enthusiasts’ from the Portsmouth area. We hope you all enjoyed the evening.

Hopefully we can keep this going and have a meeting up of the 2 clubs again.
