Newsletter: 72 for August 2002 This month on AUGUST 14th we are Table-Hopping. The whole idea of table-hopping is to go to a table, restaurant or in a pub, or in a dining room or suchlike and perform a few tricks on or about that table entertaining those who are sat at the table. You may want to use stuff from your pocket or carry a little case or bag etc with you and or not a close up mat if there is room. That will be the set up at the meeting with 5 or 6 tables laid out with a few chairs round the tables. When you perform at a table someone else will follow you so you move onto the next table and do the same effects or different effects depending how you set yourself up. You could use tricks that are easily set up again or something that doesn`t need setting up such as un-faked coins, rope or dice etc etc. If you reckon on not more than 10 minutes then that should be ideal. Last month we had the A.G.M.: Briefly we elected the same officers plus one other that of publicity officer namely Stuart Harley, so if you have any news etc then contact Stuart either by mail or email on stu@acesmagic.co.uk The finance situation is good with a current status of £668.42 in the coffers! but it was felt that the sub had to go up a pound and of course it goes without saying that this years subs are now due! This next report was kindly sent in by our producer. Mike Elvin June saw ACES perform 2 shows, one in Burgess Hill and one in Portslade. We had problems getting performers for the shows mainly due to people being on holiday, or difficulty getting time off work. However once again we managed to get full quota`s so it all worked out ok in the end. The Burgess Hill Show - The Martletts Hall was a good venue. The facilities were very good. The stage had good access and curtains. David Avery who had been provided by the Burgess Hill Festival Group did the sound and lighting for us. There was a large dressing room but very few people used it. I feel all in all, this show went very well. The performers were Jonathon Cann, Martin Lewes, Stuart Harley, Dave Pattenden, Robin Toft, Malcolm Russel, Geoff Hunt and myself. The only real flaw in this show was that we were led to believe there was only one raffle prize, but unexpectedly there were loads so it became very time consuming. Not that the audience were aware off any time problems. A special praise is due for Stuart who had not been involved in an ACES show before who was the Stage Manager and then had to be roped in at short notice to perform as well. There was a reasonable sized audience with the organizers being aware that they could have done more to sell tickets. Marion Steele said she had learned a lot and would be able to improve on it next time. We could be asked back again? The Portslade Show - Portslade Town Hall. This was a hard venue to perform in. There was no curtain and access to the stage was by means of walking in front of it and stepping onto it. The lighting was poor and we had some sound problems. We were told it was sold out although when we performed there were a few spaces free!! This show was for the Portslade Festival group. The performers included Robin Toft, Stan Reynolds, Malcolm Russet, Jonathon Cann, Reg Parker, Geoff Hunt, Dave Pattenden and myself. This was the first time Dave had operated as a compere, so well done Dave. The audience was a good one and they all went home happy. I would like to thank everyone for the great effort they put into the shows. I would also like to say thanks to Dave and Robin who found these shows for us. We still need more shows so please send our leaflet out to any one who you feel might be interested. There are a few points I would like to raise but I will keep them until we have a meeting on show presentation. Here`s looking forward to the next show. We made £172.OO on the Portslade show but we are still waiting to get some money for the Burgess Hill show. We do need a couple of shows this next year! Written by: John Taylor |
